If you choose not to accept this assignment your computer will explode in 3, 2, 1…

Did you duck and cover? Didn’t think so.

That would be a pretty dick move of me to blow up your computer. Even if I did have the know-how and technological means to do so. But I don’t.

Well, back to reality.

The mission I’m referring to is not the kind that requires cool weaponry, daring escapes, hot busty women, or rope – they always need rope in the movies.

I’m talking about purpose; the goal of HoboDrifter.com. A mission statement if you will.

I’ve written and re-written the About page of this blog about half a dozen times (you probably haven’t noticed). I couldn’t quite find the words to describe what this site, and myself, are all about.

If You Fail, Try, Try Again… Then Maybe One More Time if You Have To

Over the weekend I think I finally nailed it, hit a home run. I’ve been fist pumping and hollering like an idiot since early this morning. The neighbors might be moving out.

I’m sure you’ve had this happen to you at least a dozen thousand times:

You’re out with some friends, having a few foam tops when you are spontaneously introduced to a friend of a friend. An informal handshake ensues then BOOM, the inevitable question that is harder to avoid than the speeding cars on level 50 of Frogger.

“So, what do you do?”

Developing a common response to that question has escaped me for years.

“Um, I do a lot of things. I like to watch movies, go to the beach, read a book. You know, stuff like that. Oh, what do I do to make money…”

Even when I had a single steady job I always enjoyed coming up with unique ways to put a twist on it. When I worked in construction I would say, “I build America.” When I sold Cutco cutlery I would say, “I make culinary dreams come true.”

Making up unique job descriptions was more for my own sake. In all honesty I hate answering that question when I first meet someone because I tremendously dislike the immediate classification that takes place. Maybe I am just embarrassed about what I do. But no more of that silliness…

I decided to stir up the creative juices and whip together a delectable cocktail of mind blowing awesomeness. The goal: devise a method to simultaneously describe what I do and who I am.

Intrigued?

Your real mission, if you choose to accept it: take a quick peak at the new About page (link below). A few minutes is all you should need. You can read it between sending out that email to your co-worker about how zany the U.S. economy has been and watching that sweet double rainbow video on YouTube.

So lay back, crack open a cold one, spark up spliff if that’s your thing (I’d advise against both of those if you’re at the office), and decide if you want to see just how deep this rabbit hole goes…

So, What Do You Do?

About the Author: Steve O’Neill is your average guy who enjoys it all. Professionally, his background is diverse, from intern architect to Cutco salesman. Now, it’s all about adventures: writing, motivating and enjoying the journey every step of the way.

I just wanted to give you all a brief overview as to how my site is set up. The picture menu below the main title links you to my main 5 pages (this refers to my original travel layout).

About (Now the Origin of HoboDrifter)- A brief summary of how I fell into this nomadic lifestyle, and why HoboDrifter.com was founded

Photos- I’ll be uploading photos from my most recent journeys as well as the highly anticipated travel beard updates

Videos- The first section titled “Awesome” is simply just that, a hand picked selection of awesome videos purely for your entertainment. Below that will be a collection of videos created while touring Europe.

Gear- This is a page dedicated to letting the die hard followers of HoboDrifter.com get an inside scoop as to what gear I have selected to take with me.

Map- This is my favorite page, with an interactive map highlighting the cities I’ve been and pointing out the various attractions I’ve visited. Keep your eye on this page as it should be changing quite often.

(The following was for my travel layout…)

That covers the main elements, all that’s really left is the sidebar on the right hand side of the site. The majority of it is self explanatory, but the bottom icons may need some clarification. The orange icon is to subscribe to my feed via rss (get updates when I post new material). The blue icon to the left is to subscribe to newly posted comments. One more to the left is the facebook icon, which links to the hobodrifter facebook page. Next to that is a link to the hobodrifter twitter page. And last but not least is the link to my YouTube channel. I almost forgot the most important icon of all… the Donate button. If you would like to donate to my cause and help sustain my travels click on that beautiful blue button. This will direct you to my paypal page where you can select how much you would love to generously donate. I hope this helps explain how HoboDrifter.com is set up! Let me know if any links or pages are not working properly or if any other technical snafu’s occur.

Welcome ladies and gents to a unique experience that has already begun… now I’m just documenting it. This is, however, a big crossroads in my life as I will soon be venturing across the pond (a.k.a. Atlantic Ocean) to explore the continent known as Europe. I’ll be exploring new countries, cultures, languages, and people. You happen to get the inside scoop to all the cool, fun, awesome, and most likely incredibly stupid things I’ll be doing along the way. As always, feel free to keep me updated on your lives and what I can do to make this site (or my life in general) more user friendly. Enjoy!
